Part of the promise of AI for marketers is the ability to produce high-quality content at scale.
But most AI writing tools are built for a more generalist audience. Small business and enterprise users tend to focus on writing the odd article, rather than publishing at scale.
With many AI tools, creating long-form content can require multiple rounds of prompting that prioritizes customization over scale.
In this article, we’ll explore 7 of the leading AI writing tools with a focus on what content marketers really want — tools that help generate high-quality, publishable articles quickly and easily.
Best AI tools for content writing
1. Byword
Best for high-quality AI content at scale
Unlike most AI writing tools, Byword is focused on the needs of large-scale SEO projects. If you need a few hundred words of AI-generated text for your Facebook Ads copy, other tools may be better suited to your needs.
But if you need to build out a topic silo of hundreds of high-quality articles, Byword has you covered in a way no other tool does.
Byword is a cloud-based platform with the ability to generate hundreds of high-quality articles in bulk, unlocking new SEO possibilities.
For example, a financial modeling app used Byword to create thousands of pages targeting common queries about Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, and popular accounting platforms. Within 12 months, the campaign was generating 750K organic sessions per month.
Features
- One-Click Article Generation: Generate an article using only a keyword or article title.
- Batch Article Generation: Generate multiple articles at once from a list of keywords or article titles.
- Automatic Internal Linking: Implement internal linking between pages automatically (at scale).
- Write from URL: Let Byword write improved versions of competitors’ articles.
- Programmatic Builder: Use variables to bulk generate comprehensive topic silos.
One-Click Article Generation
The first thing that stands out about the Byword experience is how hands-off it is. Just enter your keyword or article title, select the article length, and sit back as the article generates itself.
Within a few moments, you’ll see your completed article:
Byword’s settings allow you to set your article length and define your tone of voice. An AI Detector Evasion feature also helps your content get a green light from AI detectors.
Byword also accompanies each article with a relevant AI-generated image. To keep branding consistent across all your articles, you can force Byword to stick to a single color scheme. You can also customize the image’s dimensions.
Batch Generator
Byword’s superpower is its bulk generation feature: input a list of keywords or article titles and get fully-formed articles in a few minutes.
With this feature, you can produce hundreds of articles in a matter of hours. By integrating with platforms like WordPress and Webflow, you can publish new articles directly to your website.
Automatic Internal Linking
If you want Google to discover and rank your website’s content, adding internal links is critical. Human writers link to related articles naturally, but internal linking can be a challenge when generating content at scale.
Byword’s AI-powered interlinking tool solves this problem. First, Byword analyzes your website’s sitemap to understand the content of each page. Later, when Byword is generating an article, it identifies relevant pages and inserts internal links automatically. This unique feature works whether Byword is generating one article or bulk-generating hundreds of articles.
Write From URL
Much of content marketing is about researching what your competitors are doing — and then finding a way to do it better. Byword’s Write from URL feature speeds up this process by scraping competitors’ URLs, making it easy to build new and better articles on the same topic.
Programmatic Builder
Most SEOs focus on high-volume searches, leaving many longtail searches uncovered. How to grow tomatoes, for example, might be a well-covered topic in California but less so in other countries with lower search volume.
Programmatic SEO, combined with AI, allows you to cover longtail topics at scale while adding value by tailoring your content to a niche audience.
Plus, use other features such as:
- Multi-language: Write articles in 20+ different languages.
- Google indexing: Generate sitemaps and request indexing at scale to rank faster.
- Image generation: Get AI images to go with each article, cutting down the time you need to spend publishing.
- Custom writing styles: Choose from a range of predefined writing styles, or give Byword your own custom writing guidelines.
- Social post generation: Generate social posts from your article tailored for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
- Specific article lengths: Give Byword a target article length between 1K and 3K words.
- CMS integrations: Automatically publish your articles straight to your CMS.
Bottom Line
With its ability to create high-quality content at scale using AI, Byword flips the economics of content marketing by allowing you to rank first, edit second. For SEOs and content marketers eager to experiment with publishing at scale, Byword is the tool for you.
2. Frase
Best AI writing tool for briefs and content optimization
Frase was launched before the generative AI boom as a content optimization tool. Its strengths lie in AI-powered research, content briefs, and search engine optimization.
While Frase does offer AI-generated content, it’s not the tool’s focus, and it tends to produce just enough to get writers moving in the right direction.
For example, in our testing, Frase’s Long-Form Article Writer tool produced 469 words of “unoriginal” quality.
Frase is a tool that’s best used strategically at the beginning and end of the content creation cycle. At the start of a campaign, Frase helps content managers consolidate information from the SERPs and create content outlines that are likely to rank. After articles have been produced, Frase makes it easy for content managers to optimize them for better rankings.
Features
- SERP Analysis: Analyze top search engine results and get a birds-eye view of the competition.
- AI-Powered Outlines: Generate a full AI-powered outline in seconds.
- Topic Model: See what keywords to include to maximize search performance.
- Content Collaboration: Easily collaborate with freelancers, editors, and content managers.
Bottom Line
If you’re working with a team of human writers, Frase is an essential tool for speeding up your research, content briefs, and optimization workflow. Its AI content generation abilities are functional, but they aren’t the core focus of the product.
3. Jasper
Best all-in-one AI marketing suite
Jasper burst onto the scene in early 2021 as one of the first mass-market AI content writing tools. Since then, it’s undergone a significant evolution in pricing, positioning, and features. Jasper now positions itself as an all-in-one AI marketing suite for enterprise or, as its marketing copy says, “A Better AI for Business.”
Jasper’s new Campaigns tool is an example of this enterprise focus. If you’re a corporate marketing manager and want to turn a single brief into multiple on-brand assets, Campaigns lets you do that while easily collaborating with your team.
This focus on AI for Business means that, while Jasper has an impressive breadth of capabilities, it isn’t designed for publishing content at scale. Jasper’s “One-Shot Blog Post” feature resulted in a 658-word blog post that — while being a decent start to an article — still required a significant amount of writing (or additional prompting) to get it to a publishable state.
Features
- Jasper Everywhere: An extension that brings Jasper features to your social media, email, CMS, and more.
- Jasper Brand Voice: Train Jasper on your brand identity, company history, products and more so your content is relevant and on-brand.
- Jasper Campaigns: Turn briefs into comprehensive marketing campaigns and collaborate on them with people from across your company.
Bottom Line
Jasper’s homepage touts customer stories from big brands like Sports Illustrated and Anthropologie. For small business and enterprise use, Jasper is great for getting everyone on your team using AI. It produces long-form content effectively, but content at scale isn’t its focus.
4. Writesonic
Best AI writing tool for ecommerce and social
Writesonic is a comprehensive AI writing tool with 80+ features, covering everything from Amazon product descriptions to real estate listing descriptions.
AI Article Writer 5.0 is Writesonic’s newest AI writing feature. Here’s how it works: Writesonic scans the top articles in Google for you, and then you select the articles you want to reference when generating your own article. What we love about this tool is how tailored it is to the needs of content marketers — we’re all trying to learn from what’s already ranking in Google and create something better.
One challenge is that Writesonic charges for scanning reference articles and for generating your AI-powered article. To save credits, you’re incentivized to select just one or two reference articles; unfortunately, that increases the risk of accidental plagiarism. In our tests, we were able to get Writesonic to produce an excellent 1800-word article; however, it was noticeably similar to the reference articles.
Features
- 80+ AI Tools: AI tools purpose-built for common marketing tasks, from Google Ad descriptions to blog outlines to cold emails.
- On-Brand Articles: Create on-brand articles by uploading your existing company documents and blog posts to Writesonic.
- Factually-Correct Content: Writesonic’s AI article writer scans top-ranking Google search results to include accurate, updated content.
- SEO Integrations: Writesonic integrates with leading SEO tools like Semrush and Surfer for added optimization.
Bottom Line
Writesonic is an impressive AI writing assistant for freelancers, marketers, and small businesses. While it doesn’t cater specifically to the needs of high-volume publishers, content marketers who use Surfer or Semrush should consider giving Writesonic a look to benefit from its native integrations with those tools.
5. Longshot
Best AI writing tool for skyscraper content and current events
Longshot has a unique focus on up-to-date, factual content, which is a common roadblock when using AI tools. Its Fact Check tool checks to see if the content you’ve generated is accurate; meanwhile, a tool called FactGPT allows you to generate content based on current events, reducing AI hallucinations.
We used Longshot’s “educational post” workflow to generate a long-form article. While the multi-step workflow isn’t great for content production at scale, it does allow for hands-on customization of the blog.
Longshot took around ten minutes to generate the article, but it didn’t skimp on details: it generated 3675 words, which was much more than any of the other tools tested. This makes Longshot an interesting choice for anyone focusing on skyscraper-style content. Longshot was also diligent about citing its sources.
For writers focusing on fast-changing industries or current events or just doing research for writing an article, Longshot’s FactGPT feature could be genuinely useful. We asked FactGPT to “give a summary of what happened in Ted Lasso Season 3” (a show that was released in 2023). It passed the test with flying colors while providing relevant citations.
Features
- Workflows: Use Longshot’s prebuilt workflow templates or build your own for AI content generation customized to your needs.
- Fact Check: Longshot can use AI to check if content is accurate, and Longshot’s FactGPT tool is great for publishing content on current events.
- Semantic SEO: Adapt your articles based on an SEO content score to ensure what you’re creating is topically relevant.
Bottom Line
AI models aren’t great at referencing current (post-2021) events or ensuring content is factually accurate. Longshot’s unique tool helps writers address both of those issues, making it worth exploring for anyone creating skyscraper content or writing about current events.
6. Rytr
Best AI writer for beginners
Some AI writing tools can feel intimidating and overwhelming to new users. But using Rytr feels immediately comfortable, and its intuitive interface feels like Google Docs with a bit of AI thrown in.
To write long-form content, you first need to generate a blog idea and outline. Then, you select each heading and paragraph description within the outline and use AI to expand it into a full section.
What’s great about this — especially for users new to AI or anyone who needs flexibility — is that it’s easy to tweak each paragraph or section before using AI to expand it. This process does use credits pretty fast. Rytr’s “Saver” plan includes 100k characters, and generating a single article burns through about 10% of that.
Features
- Templates for 40+ Use Cases: Templates for uses from Facebook ads to video descriptions.
- Rytr Chat: Alternative to ChatGPT that’s focused on marketing and business content.
- Write in 30+ Languages: Rytr allows you to create content for a global audience.
The Bottom Line
Rytr is a solid all-around AI copywriting tool, especially for beginners and day-to-day marketing use. With seven million users globally, it’s attracted a huge audience of writers, businesses, and marketers.
7. Copy.ai
Best AI writer for copywriters and short-form content
With over 10 million users, Copy.ai is one of the leading AI writing tools. While long-form content isn’t its strength, we were able to get a decent, though short, first draft using Copy.ai’s Blog Post Wizard.
However, the real heart of Copy.ai is its short-form content generation for social media managers, email marketers, copywriters, and marketing generalists. Copy.ai has 90+ tools and templates, more than any other tool reviewed in this article.
Copy.ai’s Freestyle tool is perfect for marketing tasks. Rather than digging through templates, you just type in what you want to create, input a few bullet points, choose a tone, and — voilà!
Features
- 90+ Tools and Templates: Plus a Freestyle tool for anything else you need.
- Blog Post Wizard: Use AI to create an outline and generate a first draft fast.
- Chat by Copy.ai: Like ChatGPT, but with access to real-time data.
Bottom Line
Copy.ai understands what it’s audience of marketers and sales professionals need. From social media posts to email marketing, Copy.ai has 90+ templates for nearly everything, and for everything else, its Chat and Freestyle tools fill in the gaps.
How to find the best AI writing tool for you
Keep these questions in mind to find the best AI writing software for your use case.
What type of content are you writing?
Assuming blog posts and articles are your primary use case, Byword, Frase, and Longshot are good options for generating quality long-form content. If you’re also looking for short-form content, like social media posts and ecommerce descriptions, a more generalist tool like Rytr, Jasper, Writesonic, or Copy.ai may be a better fit.
How big is your organization?
Byword and Frase are tailored for SEOs and content marketers, while larger organizations will appreciate the collaborative features of Writesonic, Copy.ai, and Jasper. Rytr and Longshot are good choices for freelancers.
What’s the scale of your campaign?
What is the scope of your content marketing campaign? Any tool on this list can produce a decent long-form article or two. But if you’re looking to publish dozens or hundreds of blog posts or run programmatic SEO campaigns, Byword is the clear choice.
AI writing tool buying guide
Still not sure which AI tool is right for you? Here’s a breakdown of the best AI writing tools for each use case:
- Byword: Best for high-quality content at scale
- Frase: Best for briefs and content optimization
- Jasper: Best all-in-one AI marketing suite
- Writesonic: Best for ecommerce and social
- Longshot: Best for skyscraper content and current events
- Rytr: Best for beginners
- Copy.ai: Best for copywriters and short-form content
Getting started with Byword
Most AI writing tools have a vast set of features, from chatbots to email marketing tools. (We’ve even seen AI poem generator templates).
But while generalist AI writing tools are perfect for many use cases, they can struggle to generate high-quality content at scale. They simply aren’t built to serve that need.
Byword is different. It was built specifically with large-scale SEO projects in mind. Byword’s features, like Batch Article Generator, Write from URL, Internal Linking, and Programmatic Builder, make scaling SEO projects simpler than ever.
Sign up at Byword.ai, and you’ll get 5 credits to test Byword out for free and see how it can work for your projects.
